My Story
I'm Liz. Born and raised in sunny San Diego, I love traveling through books and planes to places with actual weather. I'm interested in anything put in front of me, from physics to politics to a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Learn more at my digital portfolio! http://elizabethegler.weebly.com/
Internship at UC San Diego
I interned under Dr. Adam Burgasser at the Cool Stars Lab at UCSD. This helped me further my interest and knowledge of space, especially brown dwarfs, the stars we were looking at. I also got more familiar with the programming used in astrophysics, and the complex language of scholarly aritcles.
COSMOS at UC Davis
The summer before my junior year I attended COSMOS at UCD in the astrophysics cluster. I spent a month among amazing people, learning about the life, the universe, and everything. My specific project was calculating the rate of the expansion of the universe using supernovae. Isn't that the coolest?
Model United Nations
Model United Nations is an academic competition that simulates a United Nations conference. Students are given a country and a topic and must reach a resolution for the topic with other students, all acting as their country. I've been to four conferences as Israel, Croatia, and Pakistan.
Pilot's License
Earning my pilot's licence has been a dream of mine since I was young. This summer, I took the initiative to find a teacher. I've been flying once or twice a week since and working towards my student licence. I hope to earn it before starting college.
Musical Theater
I've acted on and off since I was five with local youth theatres such as Junior Theatre and J*Company. Being onstage with a live audience is one of the best feelings I've ever had. I've been in Hello Dolly, Grease, Shrek the Musical, Wicked, and most recently, Titanic!
Traveling
The world is my oyster! I've been traveling since I was two months old. I've visited 24 U.S. states and 3 countries (not including America). I love discovering new places, and learning about the history of the world and its people.
Fencing
I've wanted to fence since reading the Spiderwick Chronicles in fifth grade, and after I got my driver's license, I had the freedom to finally do so! I fence with the Cabrillo Academy of the Sword. I'm learning foil now, and some day hope to learn sabre.
Shakespeare Society
My friend and I founded HTH's Shakespeare Club to remedy the lack of dramatical arts in our school. Our goal is to introduce Shakespeare to students who have never experienced the works of the Bard and to enjoy the words he has left through the ages.
